HX3.7 Mainboard

Preface

HX3.7 (HX3 mk7) is the follow-up model of the well-known HX3 mk5 and mk6 boards. While maintaining size and form factor, it offers higher performance and more flexibilty by using a larger 7th generation XILINX FPGA and a more powerful ARM microcontroller that handles the user interface.

As an option (extended licence required), the new HX3 engine is capable of emulating all electromagnetic organs including H100, combo organs, several concert organs of the 70s and 80s like Böhm Orchester and Wersi Helios. This implies up to 15 harmonics, up to 12 drawbars per manual with individual mixtures, including phasing rotor (WersiVoice), mechanical and electronic keying available simultaneously. ADSR envelope available on all drawbars, also H100 percussion and "Harp Sustain". New tone generator switchable from tonewheel to TOS (top octave synthesizer) or single note mode, loadable generator waveforms for "cheesy" combo organs as well as fully fledged concert organs.

HX3.7 components are meant to be installed by a skilled technician. Basic IT knowledge is mandatory since software has to be installed and configurated in some cases.

Features

The improved, highly integrated HX3.7 mainboard will be available by end of 2024. It replaces the current HX3.6 mainboard and should be compatible with most existing installations. The basic HX3.7 board offers 2 audio output channels like HX3.6, while the HX3.7 EFX version offers 4 channel DACs, full Leslie speaker control circuits and an effects insert loop with additional ADC between internal tube amp and internal rotary simulation. This allows separate use of the rotary simulation for external musical instruments as well. Basic HX3.7 boards may be upgraded to HX3.7 EFX by factory.

HX3.7 does no longer offer "legacy" button/switch inputs (like Panel16) and classic analog drawbar inputs (old green DB9/DB12 boards). Instead, it relies on I2C bus interfaces on external panels (like Preset16, Extern16 or VibratoSwitch) and analog scanning MPX bus circuits as found on PTX, ANX, DBX9 and DBX12 drawbar boards. For existing OEM installations, we will offer an interface (LegacyBoard) providing connectors for legacy hardware. However, we strongly recommend I2C bus (PANEL I2C connector, for buttons/switches/LEDs) and MPX bus (ANLG MPX, analog scanning for pots/drawbars) circuitry as this greatly reduces wiring effort.

Common Features with HX3.5/HX3.6

  • Same HX3 Manager, firmware and FPGA sound engine
  • Same PCB size, same mounting holes
  • Same location of DC, USB, audio and MIDI connectors
  • MenuPanel/Preset Bus Connector (I2C)
  • Analog MPX Bus for newer DBX, PTX and ANX boards
  • Auxiliary MIDI out, Fatar scan and pedal scan connectors
  • Digital signal processor (DSP) for reverb, GM voices and USB handling

Omitted Features

  • No onboard drawbar inputs
  • No onboard button/switch inputs
  • No ExtensionBoard connector (Leslie control and headphone amp circuit integrated on board now)

Additional Features

  • Stereo Headphone amp
  • Improved DACs and audio amps/filters
  • 3 onboard MIDI connectors (2x IN, 1x OUT), MIDI OUT may alternatively be mounted on JackExtension
  • Onboard audio output jacks may be jumpered as L/R mono jacks or stereo L/R and stereo headphone jack
  • Features integrated with enhanced HX3.7 EFX version:
    • Integrated 11-pin Leslie™ control, ExtensionBoard pinout on 14-pin box header PL1
    • Additional DAC (outputs for plain organ and pedal signal), total of 4 audio output channels
    • Insert loop (mono effects insert between tube amp simulation and rotary simulation)
    • Additional output signals and effect loop input available on 16-pin box header PL2 and 3-pin wire-to-board connectors
    • JackExtension PCB available for additional MIDI and audio input/output jacks, same jack location as old extension board

Technical Data

Size: 200 x 100 mm

Power Supply: 5V/400mA or 9-12V/300mA (without peripherals)

Sound generation: HX3 mk7 Sound Engine, hardware emulation (physical modeling) by 7th generation FPGA. 61 keys on upper/lower manual as well as pedal. 15 harmonics per key, Hammond-type percussion on all harmonics. Keying of each harmonic selectable to "mechanical" (Hammond-type key contacts) or electronic gating (LSI/transistor organs). Electronic gating uses separate ADSR circuit for each harmonic and each key (915 ADSR/VCA circuits per manual).

Quad core DSP with 64 MByte sample memory for reverb/efx and 128 GM2 voices. 81-note polyphony.

Connections: 1/4" jack footswitch, 1/4" jack Swell pedal (Yamaha FC-7 or similar), DIN-5pin MIDI IN, MIDI IN2, DC jack 5V or 9V wallwart power supply min. 500mA, 1/4" jacks for stereo audio output or headphone, USB MIDI jack (must be soldered in place if needed). I2C bus system for MenuPanel and Preset board connection (compatible to our Preset12-2 and Preset16 boards), MPX bus system for analog controllers. HX3.7 EFX version features effect loop insert and separate DAC for external Leslie™ control (integrated ExtensionBoard).
